Our recycled timber staircase of Vodka Oak was featured in a Guide to Staircases, published by Real Homes in their September 2020 edition.
Vodka oak first came to our attention while exploring timber options for a client brief. Our clients wanted a characterful look to work with their period property, but not to the extent of green oak with its distinctive cracks and twists.
The stability of reclaimed timber offered a promising solution and during our research we found some oak that had started life as Vodka casks. The Polish distillery had switched production from oak casks to steel vats and the oak was surplus to requirement.
Vodka oak has a distinct patina; it is cooler in tone and often more figured than new European oak. It is also less likely to move as it dries out, because most of it’s movement took place during its first life as a cask!
